Celebrating the lastest historical marker installation

Oregon Travel Experience, the City of Lafayette, and the Oregon Historical Program recently dedicated a new historical marker commemorating Lafayette suffragette Abigail Scott Duniway.

The new interpretive marker is located at Joel Perkins Park on 8th and Jefferson Streets in Lafayette.

In Lafayette during the 1860s, Duniway raised a family, established her own school, took in boarders, published her first novel, and worked tirelessly for a woman’s right-to-vote. In 1912 Oregon Governor Oswald West recognized Duniway’s 42 years of leadership when he asked her to write and sign Oregon’s Suffrage Proclamation. It was the first time an equal suffrage proclamation had been written by a woman in US history.
