Image of Oregon Travel Experience Government Camp rest area celebrationJune 13th may have been a chilly day (in fact, it was downright goose-bump weather), but the celebration was outstanding. And, for Government Camp, 40 degrees is considered shirtsleeve weather for fulltime residents.

What were all the tents, cookies, lemonade, and speeches about? It was a big thank you to the many participants who helped save the Government Camp rest area.

The collaborative effort is a prime example of what can be accomplished when Legislators, local government officials, and state agencies put their collective heads together with local citizens to find alternatives to shutting down highly used  rest stops.

Clackamas County invited Oregon Travel Experience to participate and we enthusiastically said “Yes!” Our CEO Cheryl Gribskov did an interview with Clackamas County Community Television (which we’ll link to as soon as it becomes available), the amazing Craig Campbell spoke on our behalf, and our intrepid and hard working rest area staff was on hand to ensure that everything gleamed.

The list of speakers reflected those in the Oregon Legislature and local government who worked tirelessly to ensure that Government Camp was included in Senate Bill 1591. Among the dignitaries: Senator Chuck Thomsen, Representative Mark Johnson, Clackamas County Commission Chair Charlotte Lehan, Clackamas County Commissioner Jim Bernard, and Bob Reeves, from the Villages at Mt. Hood Board of Directors.

We’ve posted a photo gallery on the agency Facebook page so make sure to visit the gallery.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this event such a success.
