The Clackamas County Board of Commissioners will host a celebratory event Wednesday, June 13, 2012 to mark the passage of legislation that ensures the Government Camp Rest Area – the only rest area between Madras and Portland – remains open for recreational users, travelers and freight transporters.
The day’s events will begin at 1:30 p.m. and feature community partners and Legislators who helped retain the highway safety rest area for the public. The itinerary includes:
- Senator Chuck Thomsen
- Representative Mark Johnson
- Clackamas County Commission Chair Charlotte Lehan and Commissioner Jim Bernard
- Bob Reeves from the Villages at Mt. Hood Board of Directors
- Craig Campbell, representing Oregon Travel Experience
Senate Bill 1591, which was passed by the Oregon State Legislature during the 2012 Session, transfers management of the rest area from ODOT to the Oregon Travel Experience (OTE) and guarantees long-term funding for this critical component of the state’s transportation network.
“We are proud of this concentrated community and team effort that kept the Government Camp rest area open,” said OTE’s CEO Cheryl Gribskov. “This rest area serves hundreds of people every day and for many, it represents the only place they can stop and refresh before exploring the ski park and local businesses.”
Information tables from OTE, Mt. Hood Chamber of Commerce and Clackamas County Tourism & Cultural Affairs will be present. Refreshments will be served.
