Oregon Heritage Tree Program: The statewide dedication

What would life be without trees? Trees that shade. Trees that provide food. Trees whose bark, wood, and fiber produce the tools of trade, construction, and commerce. And, in the case of the Oregon Heritage Tree Program, trees whose roots are deeply grounded in our state’s history.

On Friday April 6, 2012, OTE and Oregon State University (OSU) will host a dedication ceremony for the Class of 2012 honorees. The dedication will take place at the OSU Trysting Tree, between Benton Hall and the Education Center on the OSU Campus. (The buildings are located between SW 11th St. and SW 14th Streets.)

The 2:00 p.m. ceremony will honor not only the Trysting Tree, but three other well deserved candidates: the Tub Springs Sugar Pine, the Illinois Valley Smokejumper Jeffrey Pine, and the Shipley-Cook Grove.

The public is invited to enjoy the afternoon celebration with OSU President Ed Ray, OTE CEO Cheryl Gribskov, and members of the volunteer Heritage Tree Committee. The OSU Chamber Choir will perform the OSU Alma Mater, which references the original Trysting Tree. Other speakers from the University’s Archives and Horticultural College are scheduled.
