Deschutes River State Recreation Area

From I-84, take exit 104, then drive four miles west of Biggs on old Highway 30.

After crossing the Deschutes River, emigrants completed their long transit of the intermontane west, nearly 800 miles stretching from the Rockies to the Cascades. Interpretive signs help visitors understand emigrants’ eagerness to press on toward the Willamette Valley before winter’s snow began falling and their first reactions to seeing the Columbia River—the area’s desolate landscape and high winds discouraged many.
