When Sam Allen helped build the Sunnyside Best Western in South Portland in the mid-1980s, he received phone calls about conference accommodations before the property opened its doors to the public. Allen transformed his string of “wake-up calls” into a full-service hotel and conference center on land directly across the street from the Sunnyside.
The Monarch Hotel and Conference Center hosts 20,000 square feet of prime event space. Monarch’s Director of Sales Tammy Thompson highlighted the property’s event capacity in a recent interview with OTE. “Our largest meeting room available is 13,000 square feet,” Thompson said. “And the Pacific Ballroom runs 6,000 square feet—so there’s lots of room for trade show displays or other large industry gatherings.”
Thompson said the Monarch is located opposite the Clackamas Town Shopping Center. “It’s a great spot for guests or spouses of conference attendees,” said Thompson. “They can get up at their leisure, have breakfast at Sam’s Restaurant and Lounge, and then wander over to the mall for some terrific tax-free shopping.”
Most of Monarch’s 192 guest rooms come standard with in-room refrigerators, 32” flat-screen televisions, and Serta pillow-top mattresses. “We really like to promote our beds,” said Thompson. “Our guests get the most comfortable sleep in our rooms. And if they want a little something more luxurious we have a king spa room that comes equipped with a rain-head shower, a 42” flat-screen television/DVD combination, and an oversized soaking tub large enough for two people.”
Guests at the Monarch will dine well at the in-house Sam’s Restaurant and Lounge. The Sunday brunch buffet at Sam’s includes omelettes cooked to order. If coffee is calling your name before that early morning meeting, Sam’s can serve up your favorite espresso drink—while five Starbucks locations are within walking or shuttle distance. Sam’s will also assume catering responsibilities for any conference or event that you hold at the Monarch, and their experienced catering staff will ensure your meeting or wedding meals come off as planned. Room service is also available during regular restaurant hours.
Gateway to exploration
Thompson has been with the Monarch for over two decades and says that many wonderful travel opportunities exist nearby. “There’s historic Oregon City—and we’re only ten minutes from the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center,” said Thompson. “You can go fishing and kayaking or rafting—and we’re a convenient location for day trips to Mt. Hood, Willamette Falls, or golfing in Estacada.”
“Mt. Talbert Nature Park is across the street from us,” added Thompson. “And Bob’s Red Mill, one of Oregon’s specialty grain and flour processors, is only two miles away—so it’s easy for our hotel guests to go on a factory tour.” Thompson said that the hotel is a popular place for motorcoach tours to stop because of easy freeway access leading to sights and attractions in all directions. “Just take Exit 14 (in either direction) from I-205, and there we are,” said Thompson.
